Fasken Community Center
2020
The Fasken Community Center in Laredo, Texas, offers the community a range of amenities including recreation programming, a branch library, a senior center, and a community meeting room. To further enhance the center’s offerings, a two-phase project was developed to expand outdoor amenities. In Phase I, the project includes the addition of steel canopy structures to accommodate four small picnic tables and a main canopy featuring an exterior grilling area adjacent to the existing building. These canopies are connected by concrete sidewalks, creating accessible pathways to an inviting fire pit, all surrounded by landscaping designed to attract butterflies and bees. Phase II introduces the Fasken Community Center Treehouse, a whimsical and imaginative retreat inspired by the dreams of a local child. Created in collaboration with Studio Cortez, an innovative artist collective, the treehouse is nestled in with pre-existing trees to blend harmoniously with its natural environment. In addition, a water feature was added to provide another element to the community in which they can sit and enjoy the outdoors where its location is great for birdwatchers. This charming structure fosters a deep sense of community spirit and connection, offering a magical space for visitors of all ages to enjoy.
